5.2 Load testing
The load-displacement responses measured during first-time load tests on piles S2-S5 are shown in Figure 8(a).A significant increase in the axial capacity (where capacity in defined as the load at which displacement increased with no increase in load) is evident for piles S2.S3 and S5 over a time period of 7 months.Pile S2,which was loaded l day after installation,developed an axial resistance of 344 KN and this increased to 990 KN for pile S5,which was loaded 220 days after installation.Pile S3 was load tested 10 days after installation.However,a problem with the loading frame resulted in the latter stages of the test being delayed until 2 days later (hence the initial load-unload path for pile S3 in Figure 8(a)).After 12 days.pile S3 had an axial capacity of 665 KN.Pile S4,which had the lowest driving resistance,lowest CPT qc profile and highest IFR during final installation was load tested 30 days after driving and had a capacity of 385 KN.Although the pile developed a marginally higher axial resistance than pile S2,the resistance was significantly lower than that developed by piles S3 and S5.
The increase of the tension resistance of piles S2,S3 and S5 is seen to follow a linear trend when plotted against time on a log scale,with the capacity approximately doubling per log cycle in Figure 8(b).This contrasts with the assumed trend given by the IAC line,which assumes a lower rate of aging over the first 10 days.The resistance developed by pile S4 is significantly below this trend line.Because of the differences in the qc values given by CPT S4b,installation blow-count and IFR value,the installation load capacity of this pile is likely to have been lower than the other piles installed at the site.Normal irregularities in site conditions and thus test results are not considered by the authors to be unusual.Predictions of the pile capacities (excluding S4) made using the ICP-05 method,including the IAC,are seen in Figure i8(b) to provide good estimates of the pile resistance developed at 2 and 220 days after driving.However,it is slightly conservative for the medium-term estimates of the 12-day resistance.
