　　实际上,这首诗最初是Leo Marks于1943年圣诞前夜创作的一首短诗,用于纪念在加拿大空难中丧生的女朋友Ruth.1944年3月24日,这首诗第一次被Leo Marks当成代码诗发给盟军当时的一个特别行动组的法国女谍报人员Violette Szabo,这个人后来被纳粹逮捕杀害了.
　　1958年,Violette Szabo的事迹被改编成电影,名字叫《Carve Her Name with Pride女英烈传》这首诗在剧情中成了Violette的丈夫Etienne的创作因而名扬天下.
　　2002年,一个叫Susan Ottaway的作家又把Violette Szabo的事情写成了传记出版并且书名就叫《The Life That I Have 》.
　　2010年7月31日,美国前总统克林顿的女儿Chelsea Clinton结婚大典的时候,这首诗也被当众朗读名声再次不胫而走.
