Two Concepts of Time
Imagine that for all your life,everyday at the same time you enter an artificially lighted room,take off your clothes,and take a photo in exactly the same pose.The photographs will be arranged in chronological order and made into a film,which will be played at your 72nd birthday.In less than half an hour (16 photos will be shown per second,which will make the film 27.4 minutes in total) you will be able to go through the 72 years of your blossoming and fading.The stunning film can serve to clarify for us the unfamiliar yet useful concept of time.It could resemble the fleeting images of the past seen in retrospect by some cynic or someone bent with the weight of his own thoughts.It suggests that our life occupies an extremely short period in the total time of the universe.If the life-span of the universe is 72 years,the life of a man lasts only about ten seconds.
But if we see time in a different way,everyday is a millennium of 86000 seconds.The number of chemical reactions between the particles in the human body is comparable to the number of seconds in the approximate life-span of the universe.A couple of seconds is enough for the conceiving of a baby or a revolution,an exchange of passion,a cutting insult,or a sudden death.Our life can be infinitely long or infinitely short – it all depends on how we look at it all.
