CHIVALRY
It is a tricky business showing the traditional courtesies to a woman these days. Older women still seem to appreciate and graciously accept the opened door , the proffered seat ; with younger females there is a risk of rejection and appalling rudeness. This stems from the development of "feminism", so-called ,the result of women exerting their right to equality and independence, so that any kind of deference and service is construed as sexist and condescending. And so, an innocent and attractive looking creature may turn into a veritable virago confronted with the simple courtesy which was always a pleasure to offer. It is a pity that a tribute to beauty in a casual way is in danger of rejection in a rude and insulting manner, so that young men are generally wary of striking up an acquaintance, and the traditional ways of courtship have foundered. The result is now a large number of single and lonely people of both sexes, and a loss of respect for women and an incease in sexual deviance and rape.
The concept of chivalry dates back to the time of Henry 2nd. and his wife Queen Eleanour of Acquitaine, who encouraged the idea of platonic relationships between the knights and ladies of the court through the medium of poems and songs by travelling troubadours. This was further influenced by Mallory's version of The Arthurian Myth. The knight was nothing without his horse, hence the name "chivalry" from the french "cheval" for a horse. This idea of nobility associated with horsemanship and eventually the privilege of knighthood became politically entrenched and the prerogative of royal decree. It was adopted by some of the Mystery Schools designating a cerain level of initiation, and is used in the higher echelons of The Great White Brotherhood. Otherwise it it is relegated to the recognition of rock singers, football and cricket players, and of course politicians; occasionally the merit of someone who has been of great service to humanity is so rewarded. Now that the tradition of royalty is under public scrutiny in The U.K., and confined to a small number of countries, it does not seem so important anymore in public life.
In the more ancient times predating the classical period, there was prevalent the idea of womanhood being sacred to the Goddess, as a reflection of Nature and The Source of Life. Originally, in the most primitive eras, it was very important for a tribe to so protect its females and ensure the propogation of its members, and thus have numerical viability in terms of defence, and unknowingly the gene pool. Unfortunately, nothing prevented the abuse and exploitation of women throughout the ages, and is more apparent in some parts of the world than others. Our own society which we are pleased to consider more enlightened, is not entirely blameless. The idea of ill-treatment of women is anathema to that of chivalry, now in danger of being swept aside by their newly found ethic of equality and independence. The denigration of motherhood and family life can be regarded as one of the darker aspects of the change in society, directly related to New Age conditions now well underway as we approach the end of the 20th. century .
This dissertation on Chivalry is not complete without a word on the Holy Grail . The "Grail" is a corruption of the expression "Sang Royale", meaning Blood Royal, and is in reference to the cup used in The Last Supper. There is a mythological analogy in the ancient idea of the Greek Cornucopia, The Cauldron of The Celts, the Ceremonial Vessel(Argha) of the Brahmin Priests and The Ark of the Covenant. Mystically it is The Causal Body, the Vehicle of The Soul. The Grail became the essence of "The Quest" in the Arthurian Myth, and derives from the Crusades, which we now know were a disgraceful rampage through eastern Europe on the pretext of freeing The Holy Land. A saving grace, one might say, was the effort made by The Knights Templar and The Knights of St.John in their protection of travelling Pilgrims and setting up hospitals, in accordance with the concept of chivalry and knightly conduct .The "Quest", therefore, is the effort to attain a higher state of consciousness by the lower self analagous to the "Kurukshestra" of The Bhagavadgita and is essentially an inner journey, the wanderings of the Arthurian knights being only symbolic.
The Knights Templar, by the way, were not guilty of the excesses commonly attributed to them. It was all lies spread by the church, and only supported by the inventions of the interrogators to which admissions were made under the most frightful tortures to make them reveal the secrets of their order. They made the mistake of being too influential and wealthy, becoming the bankers of Europe, and a source of finance to the kings . They were not Christians, but were adherents to the doctrines of the Essenes and the ancient precepts of Gnosticism. The outward show of Orthodox Christianity was upheld as a necessary facade, and they were on friendly terms with some of their muslim enemies in the crusades, who were of like disposition in Sufism. Some of them escaped in the remnants of their fleet together with an appreciable amount of treasure and are said to have settled in Scotland. The modern version is not that of the early Templars, and according to Blavatsky in her day, were only allowed to exist in the shadow of the Jesuits .
The Code of Chivalry is under threat from Militant Feminism. This is unfortunate and deprives women of the traditional courtesies, to which they are due as the Vessel of The Future Race and Reflection of the Goddess .
